7. Mark Swed: Dancing to the silence

WHAT’S IN THIS VIDEO: Dance and music can go hand in hand, but they don’t have to. Some dance is meaningful in silence, and other dance can contribute to or in some cases diminish the musical experience. Dance can either mirror the music the audience hears or offer a more independent choreography. Neither approach is wrong, and each brings a varied but potent possibility to a performance. Composer John Cage’s music had ties to movement and the physical experience of listening to a piece. Recordings wouldn’t do for Cage because he felt his music was about paying attention to the performance and paying attention in a way that made the music and life more meaningful.
