Class No. 4 – “A Vocabulary of Hitting Things” [NOW LIVE]

We’ve seen how the language of percussion has evolved from reinforcing music to creating new musical language. Class No. 2 – “The Physicality of Sound” [NOW LIVE]

When you think of sound as something physical, it changes how you think about making and hearing music. Yes sound is ephemeral, it starts to disappear in the air just as soon as you've heard it. But while it's alive it has energy, it has mass, it has impact. Steven Schick talks about the physical act of producing sound, the choreography of making music that is defined by the quality of the stuff you hit and the way you hit it.

Steven Schick talks about our relationships with the sounds around us and explains how those sounds become the building blocks of music. Percussionists listen to the world differently than most of us do; Steven shares how he's learned to listen intentionally and hear the sounds most of us overlook. Learn how to listen better.
